RCPI began manufacturing lead chrome pigments in South Africa in 1937. While international sanctions were in place, Rolfes virtually dominated the local market. The advent of democracy in 1994 brought with it an influx of global multinational players, exposing Rolfes to some fierce international competition for the first time in almost a decade.
We responded with innovation and transformation to retain our leadership position, further buoyed by the appointment of charismatic and creative leadership. We drove significant shareholder value by adding a number of key products to our product range, thus creating a fuller basket to offer customers.
Rolfes understands the importance of ‘green chemistry’ and the role this plays in the pigments and coatings industry. We go out of our way to follow sustainable and non-polluting manufacturing processes and seek out partners that do the same.
This precipitated the decision to close our manufacturing facilities of lead chromes and organic pigments and focus on more sustainable alternatives for the local market. Rolfes’ significant investments in the manufacturing of pigment dispersions has enabled us to accumulate a great deal of know-how and technology in this field.
Today, Rolfes remains one of the market leaders in the supply of pigments into the paint, printing Ink, plastics, and construction Industries. We are a proudly majority black-owned business, and currently listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Our long-term vision is to maintain and expand our presence in the coatings, Inks, plastics, and construction industries by forging lasting alliances with internationally recognised suppliers. This will enable and ensure our relevance in the markets we serve.
